Think reInk has built a business around the recycling of ink and toner cartridges, which benefits both our customers and our environment.

The statistics as to the environmental costs associated with ink cartridges are staggering, and it begins well before the cartridge is first installed into your printer. When we think of our inkjet cartridges it is unlikely we contemplate the environmental costs to manufacture the cartridge. You may be surprised to know the costs include alomost a pint of oil for each ink cartridge. This means it takes a full gallon of oil to produce 8 inkjet cartridges. This excludes the energy consumed in the manufacturing process, the packaging materials and lastly the shipping costs to the store and ultimately your home.

Then there are the environmental costs of throwing the used inkjet or toner cartridge in the landfill. It has been said that we in the US throw out 11 inkjet cartridges every second. That totals over 350,000,000 cartridges. If we laid them end to end they would encircle the world three times and total almost 60,000 tons of plastic placced in the landfill. This plastic will take from 450 to 1,000 years to decompose. The oil from discarded cartridges in 2009 is enough to give every vehicle on the road an oil change. If that were not alarming enough, toner cartridges are even worse. Toner cartridges weigh between 3 1/2 to 4 pounds each. This means the toal weight of cartridges thrown away in the US each year is equivalent to 67,612 Ford Explorers or 112,463 Volkswagen Beetles.

Here is a 60 Minutes report on the environmental and social devastation caused by the high-consumption culture that comes from today's technology.

As you can see, both the environmental and economic benefits of reInking your cartridges are clear and compelling. This is why we encourage our customers to "Think about the environment... Think about saving money... Think reInk."
